Flock and tufts

Flock and tufts are basing materials used to add fine plant texture to a finished base. Flock is a loose, fine fiber, sometimes static grass applied with an electrostatic tool so the fibers stand upright, while tufts are small pre-made clumps of foliage on a flexible backing that can be glued directly onto a textured base with tweezers.

Adding these details matters because it turns a plain textured base into something that reads as an actual patch of ground, grass, moss or scrubland, tying a miniature visually to a tabletop or display shelf. Static grass in particular adds a sense of scale and movement that painted texture alone cannot easily match.

Applying flock or tufts after the base is fully painted and dry, using a strong tacky glue rather than a thin one, keeps them from being crushed into wet paint or falling off later. A common mistake is covering too much of the base in grass and tufts, which can hide interesting texture work underneath or make the model look overgrown rather than naturally based.
